Evolution with Skylar
Description
Biology PhD candidate Skylar Kim talks to his “hosts” about evolution and the definition of life (hint: it’s flagella!) as he successfully replicates his ideas and parasitizes our minds.
Episode
Bio
Skylar Kim is a PhD Candidate in Biology at MIT with a degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley where he won the Outstanding Scholar Award and the Spencer W. Brown Award in Genetics, Genomics, and Development. A member of the Biology Grad Student Council and MIT Judo Club, he was a multi-sport high school athlete at Culver City High School where he was a storied leader of the math club. What Jason Learned
The city of Davis is considered the bicycle capital of the world and has a Platinum ranking from the League of American Bicyclists because of the flatness of the terrain, the weather, and low population.
What Kelcey Learned
Chip bags are injected with nitrogen gas to maintain the chip's freshness, NOT to prevent the chips from being crushed.
Top Five Tips for learning more about evolution
  1. Find well-summarized reviews (academic writings) online in the field of evolution (or any science).

  2. Read the primary literature if the academic reviews are of interest.

Fact or Fiction: Evolution Edition
  1. A panda’s thumb is actually an enlarged wrist bone that has evolved to allow the panda to hold onto its favorite foods - FACT, its favorite food is bamboo

  2. If all frog eggs survived and became froglets, the world would be knee-deep in frogs within 100 years - FICTION; because of evolution, many animals lay hundred of eggs each year to ensure that even a few reach adulthood; if all froglets survived, the world would be knee-deep in frogs within 10 years

  3. Hiccups may date back to humans’ watery ancestors - FACT, wiring in the brain that pushes water over fish gills and makes amphibians gulp air has been imperfectly wired in mammals; it can make the diaphragm go into spasms, causing hiccups

  4. Scientists believe that wisdom teeth and the appendix are leftover equipment from when humans ate a primarily fish-based diet - FICTION, wisdom teeth and appendix are assumed to be leftover equipment from when humans ate a primarily leaf-based diet

  5. “Junk DNA” refers to regions of DNA that are noncoding (meaning they do not code for a protein); in the human genome, 98% of DNA is noncoding - FACT

  6. The platypus is the only mammal to have no relation to reptiles - FICTION, the platypus is the earliest mammal offshoot from reptiles; they lay eggs but produce milk like other mammals. They have also evolved the ability to produce venom independently of its reptile ancestors

  7. One study found that men who were hungry preferred women with higher body weights - FACT, researchers suspect that this happens due to an evolutionary response to resource scarcity (a heavier woman advertises access to more resources, such as food)
